Research interests

Dr Harriet Pierpoint is an Associate Professor of Criminology at University of South Wales. She is interested in vulnerability and fairness in the criminal justice system. She has published in internationally recognised, peer reviewed journals in this field as ‘Policing and Society: An International Journal’ and ‘Criminology and Criminal Justice: The International Journal’, as well as contributing to practitioner publications and the broader media.

The National Appropriate Adult Network consulted Harriet in the development of their current national standards, approved by the Youth Justice Board (YJB), Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) and Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCCS). She was recently invited to give evidence to the Criminal Legal Aid Independent Review. She is an invited member of the South Wales Police Independent Ethics Committee and also sits on their Gold Group on Disproportionate Use of Powers.  Harriet is member of the Executive Committee of the British Society of Criminology and Co-Chair of the Vulnerability Research Network. She was selected as a participant on the Welsh Crucible 2017.

Harriet is an experienced project manager of large-scale research projects. She is particularly interested in facilitating the voices of users in the design and evaluation of projects. She has worked on projects for government departments (Youth Justice Board, Home Office, Ministry of Justice, National Offender Management Service Cymru and Welsh Government) and the third sector (St Giles Trust Cymru, The National Lottery).  She also has experience of working with research consultancies.

Supervision

Harriet is currently supervising six PhD students.
