Eileen Little

I came to Wales to work at the Newport Art School in 1990 – after having taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder and Metropolitan State College in Denver – and stayed. I worked within the expanding University advocating for the photographic as art practice and contributing to the development of the subject Photomedia, Subject Leader until 1997, which became the Photographic Art degree course, that course is now embedded within the newly developed Photography course that coincides with the new purpose built Atrium 2B at the Cardiff Campus.

I am interested in photographic narrative, image & text, the audio-visual, the photographic bookwork, identity politics, representation, philosophy of photography, history & memory, trauma theory and affect in art. Arts-based practices having emerged in recent years as an alternative methodological genre for the acquisition of the PhD qualification has afforded me the opportunity to combine writing about photography with consolidating my practice in the form of digitally animated films. At present I am specifically working on the relation of the Maternal to the photographic Punctum in post-traumatic cultures with outputs that include illustrated academic essays and conference presentations, however the main emphasis is the completion of a practice-as-research photographic monograph.
