Research interests

I am interested in photographic narrative, image and text, the audio-visual, the photographic bookwork, identity politics, representation, philosophy of photography, history and memory, trauma theory and affect in art.

Arts-based practices having emerged in recent years as an alternative methodological genre for the acquisition of a PhD qualification has afforded me the opportunity to combine writing about photography with consolidating my practice in the form of digitally animated films.

At present I am specifically working on the relation of the Maternal to the photographic Punctum in post-traumatic cultures, and engaged in thinking and writing around both mourning and privacy in relation to social media — particularly the changing idea of what constitutes human dignity, shown photographically, constantly, combined with comments and likes — with outputs that include illustrated academic essays and conference presentations.
