Research interests

I am very nosey. I want to look, touch, feel, hear, to see, ponder, question and explore what I am seeing, why I am seeing it, and what I am not seeing – perhaps because it is not there to be seen. Physiotherapy taught me one way of approaching this inherent nosiness and my social science-based EdD challenged my ways of thinking and noticing in life-changing ways.

Always interested in learning, belonging, becoming and power my enquiry work weaves together ideas around profession, healthcare and education, and is usually collaborative with the outputs practical and applied.

Having developed a new method for recording, in real time, elements of the spatial, postural and non-verbal features of social interactions, I used the method in health education and patient settings to record multiple facets of educational and therapeutic interactions. The findings challenged some assumptions and practice norms of the UK Physiotherapy profession’s approach to placement education.

My current research activity is testing the Notation System in HE learning interactions. I am particularly interested in the choreography of education, focussing on nonverbal communication to try and make visible the practical accomplishment of education in a range of Higher Education settings.

Could an ethnomethodological lens on the HE classroom shine a light on what ‘good’ teaching looks like and offer insights beyond metrics?

I have published research and scholarship activities in the following areas:

-       Physiotherapy theory and practice;

-       Physiotherapy curriculum design and learner development;

-       Educational Development and Higher Education pedagogy;

-       Sociology of professional education.

Over my career I have achieved a number of small research grants and run successful NHS ethics-approved studies. I review for a wide of journals in Healthcare Education, Higher Education, Physiotherapy practice and general education fields. I have experience as a PhD supervisor and have examined a number of PhD / EdD theses in healthcare education areas.
