Personal profile

Research interests

I am a conservation biologist and ecologist with a particular interest in birds and mammals. My work is diverse, broadly interdisciplinary and highly collaborative. I employ lab, field and analytical techniques to answer specific questions relating to the ecology of species and ecological communities and inform conservation, management and policy-related processes.

My current research projects include:

  • Camera trap assessment of ungulate populations in Canada;
  • Management of hares in Dublin Airport;
  • Movement ecology of multiple species;
  • The migration of passerines in Africa and Europe in the context of climate change;
  • Using single-board computers to explore the breeding ecology of cavity-nesting woodland birds;
  • Evaluating biodiversity monitoring approaches to inform upland management and restoration;

My research collaborators include Natural Resources Wales, the British Trust for Ornithology, the Vincent Wildlife Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Selati Game Reserve South Africa, the Zoological Society of London, Shuswap Band, Operation Wallacea, University College Cork, Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, and Ongava Research Centre.

Teaching interests

I am the Course Leader for International Wildlife Biology. Please do contact me if you have any queries about the course.

As a tutor I focus on flexible delivery, aiming to provide my students with skills, knowledge and confidence critical to their academic and personal development. I take an inclusive approach, developing strong relationships and encouraging discussion. I work to support my students in all aspects while respecting their individuality and independence.

I currently teach across two undergraduate and one postgraduate courses at USW.
