Teaching interests

Professor in Biomedical Engineering
PhD in Computer Science, Ingénieur (M.Eng.) in Electronic Engineering, MIEEEMIETSFHEA.
 
Currently, seconded as University of South Wales innovation champion from main role as Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
 
Modules taught include Product Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Masters), Advanced Digital Signal Processing (Masters), Electronic Testing (year 2) and Project Management (year 3).
 
 

Research interests

My interests include topics around signal processing, electronics and computer pattern recognition, when applied to biomedical engineering problems. I am also very interested in enterprise and real-world application of innovation.

Between 2012 and 2017 I headed the Medical Electronics and Signal Processing Research Unit (MESPRU). The unit worked in range of projects from brain computer interface, biomass measurements to EM tomographic detection of strokes. MESPRU later merged with CEPE (Centre for Electronic Product Engineering) a commercial research & consultancy unit.

I am currently involved in 3 separate projects with external partners:  Global Laser, TANGIO Ltd and Llusern Scientific and recently completed a rapid testing grant as co-investigator by the Welsh Government with GX design group.

Previously I have completed a number of research and innovation projects including a with HPC Wales, EPSRC project looking at image reconstruction in Magnetic Induction Tomography and Welsh crucible grant to with Cardiff university on using computer vision for autism research.

I am a regular reviewer of international conferences and journals such as reviewing “Pattern Recognition”, co-chair in the 26th IEEE ICM,  workshop chair at HCI 2018, reviewer for IEEE IACSSA conference, IEEE ISBI, IEEE ICIP, IEEE EMBS, invited speaker in such venues as CMOS “emerging technologies meeting” in Vancouver and Qatar University.

Supervision

I have a track record of successful postgraduate research supervision. I have been nominated for “Best Supervisor” many times and won the Faculty Student Choice Award in 2017.
