Second Life batteries project with Ford Bridgend and USW – SESS project

Impact

Description of impact

The Ford project was conducted under the umbrella of CAPSE under £3.5 ERDF funded SESS scheme. The impacts include:
Sustainable energy innovation
We pioneered the real-world testing and deployment of second life EV/HEV batteries, significantly reducing energy costs and CO₂ emissions across Welsh industry and communities.
Regional smart grid enhancement
Our partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council advanced the Smart Energy Plan, contributing to a decarbonised and digitally connected smart county.
Community-based renewable energy scaling
Our collaborative work with Transition Bro Gwaun helped enhance a local 7.5MW solar array project towards a 20MW smart energy goal using repurposed battery storage.
Industrial cost savings and carbon reduction
Ford Bridgend integrated our battery repurposing strategies to power manufacturing operations, saving costs and cutting emissions linked to battery disposal.
Knowledge transfer and workforce impact
We co-developed a publicly available guideline for stripping and redeploying 2nd life batteries, enabling Ford and partners to upskill staff and support energy resilience.
