Description of impact
Invitation to Research Reference Group: Review of English Language Acquisition in the West MidlandsLearning and Work Institute (L&W) has been commissioned by West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to conduct a review of English language acquisition (ELA) provision across the West Midlands to assess the extent to which investment in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision is meeting need in the region.
The review will examine how approaches to language learning, curriculum design and stakeholder partnerships can contribute to achieving improved and accelerated outcomes for learners, including language proficiency, the development of cultural and social capital, and progression into further learning and work.
This follows on from the 2019 provider-led review ‘Unlocking Potential: Making Sense of ESOL in the Region’, which helped develop a shared understanding of some of the issues, and demonstrated a need to increase delivery of vocational ESOL.
L&W and the WMCA would therefore like to invite you to join an expert Research Reference Group. This will involve your attendance at three virtual meetings and some preparatory reading.
The purpose of the group is to bring together expertise on ELA and the needs of residents in the West Midlands. Discussions will help shape the direction of the research, provide wider context, and inform the development of recommendations.
The first meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday 13th March 2024, from 3pm-4.30pm.
