Her new book, The Canary and the Hammer (2019), is the culmination of a four-year project looking into the story behind the search for gold, from its ancient mythological significance to the notion of space mining. Barnard presents photographs of the people, processes and equipment involved in gold mining alongside essays and historical documents in her exploration of gold as a symbol of the drive to accumulate wealth.
