Title Children to be taught 'Tax Facts' in schools Media name/outlet ITV Media type Web Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 1/11/18 Description hildren will be taught about tax in schools in Wales from Spring 2018.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has joined with a university to enable trainee teachers to deliver a programme on the facts of tax to school children.
More than 200 trainee teachers, studying at the University of South Wales (USW), will be trained to teach ‘Junior Tax Facts’ to primary school children in English and Welsh-medium schools. The education programme for young people was developed by HMRC and is available for schools to use, free of charge.
HMRC will deliver the awareness sessions to the trainee teachers based at USW’s Newport Campus, over the next academic year.
‘Junior Tax Facts’ offers an introduction to tax for 8 to 11 year-olds. The programme aims to help young children understand where the money comes from that pays for all the things that are essential to them, their families and communities – like local transport, the police, doctors and their school.
Maureen Pamplin, Head of Sustainability at HMRC, said:
We are excited about this new initiative and keen that it will be replicated in other universities across the country. We worked closely with teachers to develop this material and the University of South Wales is now leading the way in helping teachers to take it into the classroom, so that children understand what tax is, how the money is used and the link with vital public services.
When they move into secondary school, our ‘Tax Facts’ programme for the older age group, helps to prepare young people for the financial realities of life, so they understand how tax works and know what to expect when they start earning.
– HMRC, MAUREEN PAMPLIN
Jordan Allers, USW lecturer in Primary Studies, said:
Making sure our undergraduates appreciate the important role teachers play in giving youngsters an understanding of the world beyond the classroom is a vital part of what we do here at USW.
Working with the HMRC specialists on this project means that we are able to deliver even more real-life experience to our students and we are delighted that we have been involved in the development of this exciting project.
– UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH WALES, JORDAN ALLERS
‘Tax Facts’ for 11 to 14 year-olds, will be available in Welsh in Spring 2018.Title Student Teachers to Deliver HMRC's Tax Facts Degree of recognition National Media name/outlet HM Revenue and Customs Media type Web Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 31/10/17 Description I have established an exciting working relationship with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which is seeing them deliver sessions to our Primary Studies with QTS student teachers. 6 HMRC employees delivered a whole-cohort lecture to our Year 2 students on Tuesday 31 October 2017 and delivered the same session to our Year 3 cohort on Wednesday 21 March 2018. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have developed Tax Facts and Junior Tax Facts schemes. This scheme, a resource even, evolved from Tax Matters, a programme introduced back in 2014. This change [new scheme/ resource] has seen huge results in terms of educating both primary and secondary students in the areas of financial literacy, taxation, etc. Currently, around 5,000 schools, across the United Kingdom (UK), have engaged with nearly half a million students taking part. As well, HMRC have now established over 420 UK-wide 'Tax Facts Ambassadors'; colleagues working in education [schools] who contribute towards the development and delivery. Interestingly, this sits under the employee volunteering programme, with colleagues earning up to 3 days (per year) extra annual leave. I have been collaborating with Emma McQuiston, a Corporate Communications Sustainability Adviser, and Fay Dwyer, a Personal Taxation Team Leader, both working for HM Revenue & Customs. The plan going forward is that HMRC will return, annually, to continue to deliver these sessions and work with us to develop existing and new programmes/ resources to enhance pedagogy around financial literacy, profit/ loss, taxation, etc in schools throughout the UK.
