Music Therapist Perspective on the Effect of Learning an Instrument for Individuals Living with Parkinsons

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

As a music therapist I was invited to comment upon a news story where a gentleman living with Parkinsons found that learning the piano had alleviated his symptoms. We discussed the evidence based underpinning some of the potential benefits of music playing and listening, and I introduced the discipline of Neurologic Music Therapy as a neuroscientific approach to systematically using music in rehabilitation. We also discuss the human potential of creativity and music more widely and reflected on the experience of those living with Parkinsons who contributed to the programme.
