Description
A musician will seek to perform a given piece of music with performance embellishments and delicate technical nuances which are realised through both the physical approach to playing their instrument and the resultant changes in timbres and dynamics perceived. Most acoustic instrumentalists will relate to the perceived sound of their instrument in a natural rehearsal or performance environment – not in terms of a signal captured distinctly from the performer’s aural mechanism. Therefore typical studio practice dictates that without recourse to audible loudspeaker monitoring in the performance area, the musician will use headphones to monitor both existing and/or synchronously recorded musical material and their own performance; this creates a large shift in the perception of the timbral characteristics of their instrument which may reduce the effectiveness of the resultant performance.
