Ed Hooks, author of Acting for Animators, 4th revised edition, pioneered acting training especially for animators instead of stage actors. After a thirty-year career as a professional actor and acting teacher in the U.S., Ed began teaching animators in 1996 at DreamWorks/PDI when that studio was preparing Antz. Since then, he has taught for most major animation studios and video game companies internationally, including Sony, Disney Animation, CD Projekt Red, EA, Blizzard, Epic, Valve, Framestore, Ubisoft and Microsoft. Ed Hooks lives with his wife, Cally in Lisbon, Portugal. Acting for Animators is an acting class designed especially for animators. With lecture/discussion, combined with clips from animated and live-action films, you will learn the essential principles of classical acting theory. You will learn how to analyse a scene and, if it is not working acting-wise, how to fix it. Topics included are: How Empathy works and how to evoke it, scene structure (action-conflict/obstacle-objective), how emotion works in acting, how to use character power centres, status transactions, psychological gesture, and more.
Day #1: The basics and essential theories of acting.
Day #2: Review of the basics (morning) + complete acting analysis of a well-known animated feature film, either “Grave of the Fireflies” or “Coco”.
