Homicide Investigation: Enhancing Practice Through Research

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

Invited to contribute to the National Crime Agency Major Crime Investigative Support CPD presentations (over Microsoft Teams). Approximately 20-25 practitioners 'attended'.

We highlighted some of the challenges facing detectives, forensic scientists and digital experts when investigating homicide. Drawing on findings from the four-year Leverhulme-funded Homicide Investigation and Forensic Science (HIFS) project, we explored the importance of effective dialogue during the investigative process and some of the barriers to dialogue and collaboration. We then drew upon our observations of homicide investigations and interviews with SIOs and CCTV officers, to discuss the particular challenges of recovering, sharing and interpreting CCTV footage in a timely and efficient manner. Finally, based on insights from Fiona’s ethnographic research of homicide investigation in Britain and America, and her analysis of homicide debriefs, we considered the factors that influence whether homicide cases are solved. Throughout our presentation, we reflected on key learning points and opportunities to enhance the investigation of homicide.
