This lecture-demonstration draws parallels between verbal and non-verbal processes in psychotherapeutic practice, providing insight into how movement and nonverbal interventions can be beneficial to clients. It will introduce dance movement psychotherapy and some of its fundamental principles: body-mind connection, kinaesthetic empathy and body symbolism. Dance movement psychotherapy lays its foundation on the importance of creatively accessing and integrating the psychological, physical, emotional and social dimensions of human experience. These aspects will be analysed in the context of community practice, presenting a case example of collaborative arts therapies practice incorporating both visual art and movement.
