Description
In higher education, career pathways often appear linear, yet some professionals carve unique trajectories that challenge traditional norms. This presentation explores my 20-year journey moving between academic and professional services roles, reflecting on pivotal moments that shaped my professional identity and inspired me to embrace the challenges of working in "third space" environments. From the disheartening dismissal of my academic aspirations by a trusted mentor to breaking through "glass ceilings" as a Deputy Dean in a STEM faculty, I share the personal and professional growth that has come from navigating uncharted territory. Drawing on Whitchurch's typologies of third space professionals, I examine how my unconventional career path—moving from professional services into academic leadership—has not only shaped my identity but also revealed opportunities to challenge sector norms and reimagine leadership in higher education.
Through this lens, I explore questions of equity, inclusivity, and the evolving qualifications required for academic leadership. I highlight the importance of allyship, the value of interdisciplinary experience, and the critical need for innovative approaches to leadership in a sector facing unprecedented challenges.
This session will resonate with those questioning their own professional identity or seeking to support colleagues working across boundaries. It aims to inspire others to forge new paths, challenge preconceived notions, and leave a trail for the next generation of leaders in higher education.
