Using the crime scene house to contextualise digital forensics is key in learning.

Crynodeb

I set the scene using backstories of real warrants that I have attended and encourage my students to use their knowledge to think outside the box. I inform my students that these are real situations that I have seen, and it encourages them to think of the real-world applications of what they are doing. I have witnessed students change tactics to become more sympathetic towards the victim and take the time to explain steps to them because they realise that, although this is fiction, for one person it was not. They ask follow up questions that they may not have considered if it was ‘just a scene’ at the crime scene house. Using real-world examples in my teaching has shaped my students for the better and gives them a perspective that they may not have gained ordinarily.
