Older people with learning disabilities may be viewed as a potentially vulnerable group of individuals and therefore in need of safeguarding. Advocacy should be part of the safeguarding process and is a useful approach in ensuring the views of older people with learning disabilities are communicated. The role of nurses in advocating for individuals in their care has been made clear by their professional body. However, advocacy is not without risks and dilemmas for nurses and at times they may need to take an indirect role by promoting the use of independent advocacy.
