‘How many Europes?’ (Agnew, 2001; Zoppi, 2020) is a critical question that led to several attempts to analyse the multiplicity of European segments, strata, and trends as well as dichotomies such as peoples vs elites, North vs South, East vs West, intergovernmental bargains vs supranational institutions. There is a need to go beyond the existing analyses by contextualizing European crises and transformations globally. This special issue builds upon Chris Rumford’s collaborative research on ‘Europe and World Society’, ‘European Multiplicity’ and the trichotomy of ‘Thin, Thick and Parallel Europes’. Given its focus and innovative approach, European Politics and Society has become a suitable venue for the special issue that seeks to deal with ‘hot topics’ in European social and political transformations from an original and innovative perspective.
