Crynodeb

Space is more than the realm of surveyors and measurement; rather, it is central to our whole experience and is an intrinsic factor in music creation. Drawing on interviews with professional practitioners, this chapter presents an investigation into the phenomenological impact of space as a lived event on the making of British based popular music.

There already exists a wealth of extant literature relating to audition processes and the acoustic composition of spaces. However, there are further aspects beyond the workings of sound waves that have received less attention. Accordingly, a manifold consideration of space as one that also encompasses social, navigational and aesthetic concerns is presented here. Derived from the Greek word “to create” or “to make”, the phrase ‘poietics of space’ centralizes the role of the environment and, as such, current conceptualizations of creativity should be updated in order to be properly attentive to spatial concerns.
