The medieval wall paintings recently discovered at Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan include a graphic and gruesome version of 'Death and the Gallant'. This article places the painting in the wider European context. However, work on late medieval art and literature in Wales suggests that there was less emphasis on the macabre and the memento mori in Wales than elsewhere, and this may link with the rather more positive Welsh approach to death and the hereafter.
