Crynodeb
In 1994 the BBC relocated the Department of Religion and Ethics from their base in London to the offices of BBC Manchester. This research critically examines the rationale behind the BBC’s decision to move this production unit, and the impact on both the logistics and programme- making culture of the unit. Using interviews with staff working within the department at the time of the move, this research demonstrates how such political decisions are negotiated by professionals within the Corporation, in particular around the conflict between social responsibility and commercial pressure. The case of the Department of Religion and Ethics also provides important lessons for the future decentralisation to Salford Quay which the BBC is due to implement in 2011.
