Crynodeb

This chapter introduces research that was carried out between 2013 and 2015 with students with dyslexia, in the author’s role as lecturer on the theatre, drama and performance courses at the University of South Wales, Cardiff. The research uncovers and addresses issues that dyslexic students experience with academic research via books and journals, and conventional essay writing. It applies approaches drawn from practical drama methods to these areas to improve skills and engage students with academic text interpretation and creation in a more empowered way. Research activities comprised 1-2-1 interviews and a series of workshops in which academic language, concepts and sources are explored practically using strategies from verbal and physical improvisation methods. The chapter communicates the nature of this research as well as proposing principles for teaching essay writing to drama students with dyslexia.
