This paper investigates the design of an optimal energy recovery system for a hydrogen hybrid electric vehicle to allow increased range. The proposed system includes two different energy recovery sub-systems. These are; a regenerative braking sub-system and an active suspension sub-system. A dynamic model of this optimal energy recovery sub-system is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink™ and integrated with a hydrogen hybrid electric vehicle model to investigate the effect of the optimal energy recovery mechanism. The simulation results indicate the energy recovery and hence, lead to the extended range capabilities.
