On being Brazilian: Theatre performances of Grupo XIX and the search for a reality check This paper explores contemporary notions of belonging in Brazil through the work of Grupo XIX. Making work since 2001, Grupo XIX approach working experimentally and are influenced by the space, the environment, and by the personal interest and concerns of company members. This approach has resulted in a range of shows included Hysteria, Hygiene and Arrufos in which they explore questions of what it means to be Brazilian; what being 'Brazilian' means; how Brazilian national identity is constructed. Through the making of these works, Grupo XIX explore ideas of belonging and identity; and also examine the way in which being Brazilian is conflated through media, political discourse and tourism. The paper is constructed on interviews with company members, performance analysis, and reviews.
