The term lagomorph describes species of the mammalian order Lagomorpha (lit: hare-form), which is made up of two families, the hares and rabbits (Leporidae; also known as leporids) and the pikas (Ochotonidae). There are around 91 living species of lagomorph, many of which are classified as threatened (vulnerable, endangered, and critically endangered) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and/or are Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species. The order has a global distribution, with representative species being found on every continent with the exception of Antarctica, from between the equator and 80°N and between 0 and 5000 m above sea level. Habitat requirements can vary considerably, with some species being more specific in their requirements and, hence, having a more limited distribution than others.
