Intravenous (IV) drug administation is a common procedure requiring venous cannulation. Despite its prevalence, IV therapy has several associated risks, such as infection, phelbitis, hypervolaemia and anaphylaxis. This article provides a brief overview of current clinical guidance on IV therapy and the current challenges in terms of infection control and ensuring patient safety.
