As the UK Higher Education sector faces unprecedented challenges within its home market, many HEIs are seeking to attract increasingly higher numbers of students from overseas. Results are presented from a survey of 120 postgraduate students arriving to study at a UK HEI in September 2010. The majority of these students arrived from countries outside of the European Union, and therefore comprise a highly sought after target market. Results offer insights into these students' choice of UK HEI in comparison with those of UK and European (non-UK) students. The paper also considers relevant differences between different geographic groupings of students, and also, where relevant, offers further insights by students' nationality. It is recognised that there is a gap in the extant literature considering the reasons international students in general choose to study abroad, and even less knowledge concerning any differences in this respect from students in various international market segments. This paper begins to fill this gap.
