Associated Events with the show at the Architecture Centre:
The Architecture Centre has curated a series of events related to the exhibition, looking at the theme of high-rise from a variety of perspectives.
• High-rise: Screening and Discussion?- Arnolfini, Bristol: Thursday 7th November, 18:30-20.30. Framed by Peter Bobby’s exhibition, this event presents the work of artists who explore themes of architecture and transformation – possibly including work by Mark Lewis, Catherine Yass, Superflex and others.
• High-rise: Artist Talk ?Thursday 31st October, 18:00-19:30. Peter Bobby will introduce the themes and ideas featured in High-rise. As well as discussing the various manifestations of the show over a six-month period.
• International Architect Chris Wilkinson: High-rise and other stories I?Lecture at Arnolfini, Bristol: Wednesday 9th October, 18:30-20:30. The founding director of multiple award winning practice Wilkinson Eyre presents recent work including the winner of the 2012 Lubetkin Prize, the 105-storey Guangzhou East Tower in China.
• International Architect Graham Stirk: High-rise and other stories II?Lecture at Arnolfini, Bristol: Wednesday 16th October, 18.30-20:30. Senior director of the world renowned practice Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Graham Stirk presents recent work, including the 50-storey Leadenhall Building currently on site in the City of London.

N2 - Research ContextThe turn of the century brought a renewed interest and confidence in constructing high-rise buildings in a number of major cities around the world. It has become the corporate building type for an increasingly global industry and global architecture. Although many projects slowed, ground to a halt, or were scrapped altogether as a direct result of the worldwide economic downturn, others continued at a pace. This body of work, comprising of 3 integrated parts, looks in detail at these constructions using a combination of both interior and exterior still images and video.Research ImperativesBobby tackles questions about the relationship of high-rise buildings to the city below, the nature of the view, the significance that is culturally placed on the ownership of or access we have to these privileged viewpoints, the activities that take place within them, the companies that demand them and their cultural significance.Project MethodsThe work explores the discourse surrounding notions of power through architectural theory and the observation of a number of architectural/design techniques as well as addressing ideas of representation and spectatorship.
