Frankenstein’s Melancholy

In this article the author examines aspects of the novel "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. The author asserts that Gothic fiction of the Romantic era is closely correlated to mourning and melancholy and is similarly related to the the construction and deconstruction of the Romantic ego. Also examined are Romantic notions of authorship. The author argues that the identity of a disconnection between mourning and melancholy first posited by psychologist Sigmund Freud is rooted in Gothic writing and ego.
