Nomination for the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2015 for ‘Hyenas of the Battlefield, Machines in the Garden’. May 12, 2015 at 6:37 pm Nominated by Louise Clements, co-founder of the FORMAT International Photography Festival in Derby for the Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award 2015 for ‘Hyenas of the Battlefield, Machines in the Garden’.
Louise Clements wrote:
” A surprising and often disturbing examination of how war is now conducted from afar, by individuals that Barnard calls ‘bored witnesses’. An uneasy feeling pervades a tangled mesh of interconnections; from the landscapes, consequences, aftermath and trauma of conflict to the dislocated emotion of virtual drone operations, this series is a disquieting study exploring the military, the entertainment industry and technology, reflecting upon how these three fields coalesce in modern-day remote controlled warfare.”
Since 2002, five nominators, invited by the Rencontres d’Arles, have each selected two photographers to be considered for the award. All of the nominees will exhibit their work in a solo show during the festival in Arles. In the opening week the winner of the €25,000 award will be chosen and the announcement made during a ceremony at the Theatre Antique.
