Documentary photographer Lisa Barnard’s new project, “The Canary & The Hammer,” explores the way that gold—as a metal, chemical element, and symbol of wealth and power—permeates human life. The ongoing project includes investigations into the use of gold nanoparticles in electronics, medical therapy, microscopy and other applications; gold as a driver of exploration and empire expansion; and gold as a global monetary standard.
